Before his television career, Whyman worked as an IT consultant in Nottingham, having developed a long-standing interest in the paranormal following childhood experiences. In 2002, he was selected from over 1,000 applicants to join ''Scream Team'', a Living TV series following six young investigators travelling to reportedly haunted locations across the UK.

Whyman joined ''[[Most Haunted]]'' as paranormal investigator for series two and three, replacing original investigator Jason Karl, and continued into series four. He left the show at the end of series four, and was replaced by [[Ciarán O'Keeffe]], who initially reviewed investigation footage remotely before joining the team on location.
 
== Later work ==
In 2007, Whyman published his first book, ''Phil Whyman's Dead Haunted: Paranormal Encounters and Investigations'', introducing readers to different forms of reported paranormal activity and guidance on conducting an investigation. He has continued organising public ghost-hunting events, including a series called Dead Haunted Nights, and has written as a columnist for ''Chat — It's Fate'' magazine. He also appeared on the paranormal series ''Are You Haunted..?''.
