Grimsby (officially Great Grimsby) is a seaport town in North East Lincolnshire, England, standing on the south bank of the Humber Estuary.[1] Historically one of the world's most significant fishing ports, Grimsby is also the geographic and personal home base of much of the Vault's own documented paranormal history, connecting several organisations and individuals covered elsewhere in the archive.
History
Grimsby's name derives from Old Norse, and tradition credits its founding to a Danish fisherman named Grim, whose legendary rescue of an infant Danish prince, Havelok, is recorded in the 13th/14th-century poem The Lay of Havelok the Dane.[1] The area was settled by Danes around the 9th century, and Grimsby appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 with a recorded population of around 200.[1] The town received its earliest charter of self-government in 1201, and had its own mayor by 1218.[1]
From the 15th century, silting of the town's river haven caused a long decline that lasted until major dock improvements began in the early 19th century.[1] The completion of new docks and the arrival of the railway in 1848 transformed Grimsby's fortunes, and by the 1950s it had become the largest fishing port in the world.[2] The Cod Wars of the 1970s subsequently caused a sharp decline in the industry, though fishing and food processing remain part of the town's identity.[3]
Relevance to the Vault
Grimsby is a recurring geographic anchor across several entries already documented in the Vault, reflecting the town's role as an active local base for paranormal investigation across multiple decades:
- Spirit Searchers (2004–2007) — several of the team's most notable investigations took place in Grimsby itself, including the Oxfam Savers case (one of the team's own examples of a site with no detected activity beyond mediums' impressions), and further sites including The White Knight, The Market Hotel, The Longship, The Old Coach House, and Quirlys Gifts & Fashions.
- Robin Furman and the Grimsby Ghostbusters (formed c. 1984) — Furman's investigation team took its name directly from the town, where he was based and personally lived in a house locally said to be haunted.
- Paul Humphries — a Grimsby-based touring spiritual medium active for decades across Lincolnshire.
Together, these entries make Grimsby one of the most consistently represented locations in the Vault's UK-based paranormal history, spanning from the mid-1980s through to the 2000s and beyond.
