Robin Furman was a British psychologist and hypnotherapist, and one of the country's few academic lecturers in parapsychology, best known as the founder and leader of the "Grimsby Ghostbusters" — a Lincolnshire-based team of psychic investigators active from the mid-1980s.[1]
Background
Furman was based in Grimsby, on the Lincolnshire coast, where he combined his academic background in psychology with a long-standing interest in the scientific study of paranormal phenomena.[2] He reportedly lived in a house locally said to be haunted by the ghost of a nun, a detail frequently mentioned in profiles of him as part of his own personal connection to the subject.[1]
The Grimsby Ghostbusters
Furman formed the Grimsby Ghostbusters around 1984, the same year the film Ghostbusters was released, assembling a team that deliberately combined scientific and technical expertise with paranormal investigation — including a microbiologist, a computer consultant, and an electronics engineer alongside Furman's own psychological background.[3] The team investigated hauntings and reported paranormal activity across Lincolnshire and further afield in the UK, and Furman argued publicly that evidence for such phenomena deserved to be assessed with the same rigour applied to any other scientific claim.[1]
The team gained a degree of national media attention, including a BBC Radio feature in 1992 that followed them on an overnight investigation.[1] Locally, the group was well regarded; contemporary accounts describe Furman as well liked in Grimsby, with the town's community supportive of a group that had brought it a measure of national attention.[1]
Notable cases
Cases associated with the Grimsby Ghostbusters, as later documented in Furman's own book, included the haunting of Grange Farm — marked by a series of sudden deaths and unexplained accidents — a churchyard where witnesses reported mist rising from tombstones alongside sightings of cloaked figures, a "ghost train" featuring an unusually realistic apparent corpse, and a case involving a woman reportedly describing possession by an entity she identified as Pazuzu.[1]
Ghostbusters UK (1991)
Furman documented the team's investigations in Ghostbusters UK, published in 1991 and co-written with journalist Moira Martingale.[4] The book was illustrated by Uri Geller.[1]
