California is a state on the west coast of the United States, whose gold rush history, historic prisons, and grand hotels have produced an extensive body of documented ghost lore.
The Hotel del Coronado
This hotel, hosting guests since 1888, is closely associated with the death of Kate Morgan, a young woman found dead there in 1892 under mysterious circumstances after checking in alone under a false name. Paranormal investigator Christopher Chacon later conducted an equipment-based investigation of a room in the hotel's former maids' quarters, recording a number of unexplained readings — a case discussed in relation to the film 1408, which is often linked to the story.
The Whaley House
Located in Old Town San Diego and often cited as the most haunted house in America, the Whaley House was built on the site of a former gallows used for public executions. Reported activity includes apparitions of the Whaley family, including original owner Thomas Whaley himself.
The Queen Mary
Permanently docked in Long Beach, this former ocean liner and Second World War troop ship is associated with the sounds of ghostly children throughout the vessel, and with a reported spirit in cabin B340 believed to be a murder victim.
Alcatraz
The former federal penitentiary on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay is one of the most widely cited haunted sites in the country, with reported phenomena including disembodied screams, cell doors clanging shut unaided, and a persistently oppressive atmosphere attributed to its history of isolation and violence.
The Winchester Mystery House
Built by Sarah Winchester, widow of firearms magnate William Wirt Winchester, this sprawling San Jose mansion was under continuous construction for roughly 38 years, according to popular legend on the advice of a medium who told Winchester she must keep building to appease the spirits of those killed by Winchester rifles.
