Cryptozoology is the study of unknown, legendary, or purportedly extinct animals whose present-day existence is disputed or unsubstantiated — the animals themselves referred to as Cryptids. Though its practitioners have sought scientific legitimacy since the field's founding, cryptozoology is generally regarded by mainstream science as a pseudoscience, since it does not follow standard zoological method and relies heavily on folklore and eyewitness testimony rather than physical specimens.

Origins

Cryptozoology's founding is generally traced to Belgian-French zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans and Scottish naturalist Ivan T. Sanderson in the mid-1950s. Heuvelmans's landmark 1955 book, Sur la Piste des Bêtes Ignorées (translated into English as On the Track of Unknown Animals), is widely regarded as the field's founding document, compiling reports, folklore, and existing scientific literature to argue for the existence of animals unrecognised by formal zoology. Heuvelmans credited a 1948 Sanderson article, "There Could Be Dinosaurs," with sparking his interest in pursuing the subject seriously.

The exact origin of the word "cryptozoology" itself is disputed even among cryptozoologists: while Heuvelmans is often credited with coining it, later research suggested Sanderson may have used the term privately several years earlier, with Sanderson credited as the first to publish the related adjective "cryptozoological" in English, in his 1961 book Abominable Snowmen: Legend Come to Life. Heuvelmans himself traced the discipline's deeper roots to 19th-century naturalist Anthonie Cornelis Oudemans, who theorised that sea serpent reports might stem from an unidentified species of large seal.

Methodology

Cryptozoology's founders explicitly argued the field should draw on local, folkloric, and traveller testimony about cryptids alongside conventional biological evidence, treating fantastical or embellished local accounts as potentially containing a kernel of genuine, unrecognised zoological fact rather than dismissing them outright. This close relationship between cryptid reports and local folklore is the same reasoning behind The Vault filing both together under Cryptids and Folklore rather than treating them as separate subjects.

The Minnesota Iceman

Cryptozoology's most notorious case study is the Minnesota Iceman, a purported frozen hominid corpse examined by Heuvelmans and Sanderson in 1968. Heuvelmans went so far as to formally declare it a new species, Homo pongoides, in a 1969 scientific paper — a claim that provoked intense criticism from mainstream scientists, and was later undermined when the specimen was revealed to be a latex model rather than genuine remains. The case is frequently cited as illustrating both cryptozoology's ambition to achieve scientific legitimacy and its vulnerability to credulity and hoax.

The International Society of Cryptozoology

Heuvelmans and Sanderson's work led to the 1982 founding of the International Society of Cryptozoology (ISC) in Washington, D.C., intended as a central body for documenting, evaluating, and publishing cryptozoological research, with Heuvelmans as president, zoologist Roy Mackal as vice-president, and University of Arizona researcher J. Richard Greenwell as secretary. The ISC published its own peer-reviewed journal, Cryptozoology, but the organisation dissolved in 1998.

Heuvelmans's extensive personal cryptozoological archive was housed from 1975 at his own Center for Cryptozoology in France, before he donated it to Switzerland's Museum of Zoology of Lausanne two years before his death, where it remains held in a dedicated Department of Cryptozoology.

Academic status

Despite its founders' scientific ambitions, cryptozoology has never achieved recognition as a genuine branch of either zoology or folklore studies, and remains classified as a pseudoscience by mainstream science. Scholars studying the cryptozoological subculture have noted its practitioners often reject mainstream scientific approaches and can display hostility toward mainstream scientists, and have drawn parallels between cryptozoology and other pseudosciences addressed elsewhere on The Vault, including ghost hunting and ufology. Some more recent academic proposals have attempted to reframe cryptozoology's genuine practical value — as a tool for accelerating the discovery of new species and protecting undiscovered or presumed-extinct animals before formal scientific identification — while still acknowledging its historically pseudoscientific reputation.
