Highgate is an area of North London straddling the boroughs of Camden and Haringey, best known on The Vault as the setting of the Highgate Vampire case and home to Highgate Cemetery, one of Britain's most extensively documented reportedly haunted locations.

Highgate Cemetery

Highgate Cemetery, opened in 1839, is the site of the Highgate Vampire case — see that page for the full account of the 1970s media sensation and the rivalry between investigators David Farrant and Sean Manchester. Beyond the vampire narrative specifically, Farrant's original 1970 letter to the Hampstead and Highgate Express prompted a wave of separate reader responses describing a range of other reported apparitions in and around the cemetery and adjoining Swain's Lane, including a tall man in a hat, a spectral cyclist, a woman in white, a face glaring through cemetery gates, and a figure seen wading into a pond — a broader body of local ghostlore that predates, and is distinct from, the specific vampire theory that followed.

Notable people

Highgate is also indirectly connected to The Ghost Club through its founder-adjacent Cambridge origins and several of its historic members, and to David Farrant, who was born and grew up in the area.
