Dumfries and Galloway

Dumfries and Galloway is a council area in South West Scotland, encompassing the historic counties of Dumfriesshire, Kirkcudbrightshire, and Wigtownshire. Its dense concentration of medieval castles, ruined abbeys, and lonely rural roads has produced one of Scotland's most extensively documented regional collections of ghost stories.

The A75 — "Scotland's most haunted road"

The A75, running from Gretna to Stranraer, is widely described as the most haunted road in Scotland, with two stretches — the old road between Annan and Gretna via Eastriggs, and a section known as the Kinmount Straight — particularly associated with reported activity, including eyeless figures, a grinning creature seen among trees, a bodiless pair of legs, and numerous phantom hitchhikers.

Lochmaben Castle

Lochmaben Castle and its surrounding woods are said to be haunted, with visitors reporting drumming sounds and the click of horses' hooves. The site is also tied to a vampire legend dating back to the 12th century, sometimes linked to the powerful Bruce family.

Threave Castle

Built in the 14th century by Archibald the Grim of the Black Douglas clan, Threave Castle is associated with the legend of the "Ghostly Piper" — said to have entered the castle's underground tunnels centuries ago, piping as he went to guide those above ground.

Theatre Royal Dumfries

Scotland's oldest working theatre, with connections to Robert Burns, Edmund Kean, and J. M. Barrie, is also reputed to be Scotland's most haunted theatre, with reported poltergeist activity backstage.

Investigation activity

Mostly Ghostly, founded by Kathleen Cronie, is described as Dumfries and Galloway's first dedicated paranormal investigation team, running ghost and local history tours across the region and investigating reports spanning hauntings, big cat sightings, UFOs, and other paranormal claims.
