Robert Scott "Bob" Lazar (born 26 January 1959) is an American businessman best known for claiming, since 1989, to have worked on a classified U.S. government project reverse-engineering extraterrestrial spacecraft at a facility he called "S-4," near Area 51. His account remains one of the most widely discussed and disputed individual testimonies in UFO history.
Early life
Lazar was born in Coral Gables, Florida, and raised partly in Westbury, Long Island, New York. He showed an early interest in mechanical and electronic tinkering, reportedly building a jet-powered car as a teenager, and attended Pierce Junior College in Los Angeles after graduating in the lower third of his high school class.
Educational and employment claims
Lazar has stated he holds a master's degree in physics from the California Institute of Technology and a master's degree in electronic technology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Both institutions have stated they have no record of his attendance, and this discrepancy remains the single most significant challenge to his overall credibility. One part of his claimed background that has been independently corroborated is his employment as a technician at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where his name appeared in the facility's internal phone directory.
The 1989 claims
In November 1989, Lazar gave an interview to Las Vegas television station KLAS, initially in silhouette and later, in a follow-up broadcast, under his own name, stating that he had worked at a secret site known as "S-4" close to Area 51. He described being hired, following an introduction connected to physicist Edward Teller, to help reverse-engineer captured extraterrestrial spacecraft, including a saucer he called the "Sport Model," and claimed to have reviewed briefing documents describing alien involvement in human affairs. He stated the craft were powered by a stable, then-undiscovered element he called "Element 115." Lazar has said his own attempts to verify his employment and educational records afterward were unsuccessful, and has claimed his personal history was subsequently scrubbed from official records.
Corroboration and criticism
Several individuals have come forward over the years claiming to support aspects of Lazar's account, including associate John Lear, who has said he observed unusual lights over the Nevada desert at a time and location Lazar had specified in advance. Sceptics, including physicist Stanton Friedman and other researchers who have examined the case, have pointed to Lazar's unverified educational claims, a lack of any documentary or physical evidence, and technical descriptions they regard as lacking the specificity expected of a genuine reverse-engineering physicist.
Later life
In 1990, Lazar was convicted in connection with a Nevada prostitution ring. He went on to found United Nuclear Scientific Equipment and Supplies, a company selling scientific materials and equipment, which was fined and placed on probation in 2006 over the sale of hazardous materials, and was raided by the FBI in 2017. As of the mid-2020s, Lazar continues to maintain his original account largely unchanged, though he has kept a lower public profile in recent years even as renewed U.S. government disclosures on unidentified aerial phenomena have brought fresh attention to his story.
