Switzerland

Switzerland is a country in Central Europe with a well-documented tradition of haunted castles, alpine folklore, and old-town ghost stories, particularly concentrated around Bern and Lake Geneva.

Chillon Castle

This medieval fortress on the shores of Lake Geneva served as a royal residence, military stronghold, and prison, and is one of Switzerland's most cited haunted locations. Its most famous reported ghost is François Bonivard, a 16th-century monk imprisoned in the castle's dungeons — the same historical prisoner later immortalised in Lord Byron's poem "The Prisoner of Chillon" — alongside the castle's own claimed ghost of Agnès de Faucigny, a duchess of the House of Savoy.

Lenzburg Castle

One of Switzerland's oldest castles, dating to the 11th century, associated with a legend of a dragon slain by two knights before the castle's founding, and with a bell tower said to occasionally ring out of its own accord at a full moon.

Neu-Bechburg Castle

Overlooking Oensingen in the canton of Solothurn, this castle is associated with the legend of "Robber Knight" Kuoni, said to have been bricked up alive in the 14th century. In 2002, a Swiss television crew reported unexplained equipment malfunctions while filming near his supposed grave.

The Old Town of Bern

Bern's medieval alleyways are the subject of regular "Spooky Bern" ghost tours, with a house on Junkerngasse 54 particularly cited, associated with a woman dressed in black reportedly seen in an upstairs window.

The Val Sinestra Hotel

A former luxury spa hotel in the remote Lower Engadine, associated with "Hermann," a reportedly restless but non-malevolent spirit said to be an undead Belgian soldier from the First World War.
