Lorraine Rita Warren (née Moran; 31 January 1927 – 18 April 2019) was an American self-described clairvoyant and light trance medium, best known as the co-founder, with her husband Ed Warren, of the New England Society for Psychic Research (NESPR).
Early life
Warren was born and grew up in Bridgeport, Connecticut, a city she later described as fertile ground for her developing interest in the mystical, shaped by a mix of Catholic tradition and older New England ghost lore. She said she had claimed the ability to sense and communicate with paranormal entities from a young age, though this ability developed outside any formal academic training in parapsychology, psychology, or theology. She met Ed Warren at a Bridgeport movie theatre in 1944, and the two married in 1945.
Career
Warren worked closely alongside her husband throughout NESPR's history, presenting herself publicly as a clairvoyant and light trance medium in contrast to Ed's self-identification as a demonologist. Over more than five decades, the couple claimed to have investigated well over 10,000 cases of alleged paranormal activity, becoming particularly associated with the Amityville haunting and the Perron family investigation in Harrisville, Rhode Island, later dramatised as The Conjuring. One frequently cited claim is that clairvoyance testing conducted at UCLA found her abilities to register above average results, a finding disputed by sceptics including other prominent paranormal investigators.
Following Ed's death in 2006, Warren continued to be publicly associated with NESPR and the wider paranormal community, including consultation on The Conjuring Universe film franchise inspired by the couple's work.
Death and legacy
Warren died on 18 April 2019 in Monroe, Connecticut, at the age of 92. NESPR continues to operate under the leadership of the couple's son-in-law, Tony Spera, and their daughter, Judy Warren.
