The Conjuring Universe is a shared American horror film franchise built around dramatised cases associated with paranormal investigators Ed Warren and Lorraine Warren, beginning with The Conjuring (2013).[1] As of The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025), the franchise comprises ten released films, spanning the four core Conjuring films, three Annabelle films, two The Nun films, and The Curse of La Llorona.[2] Combined, the franchise has grossed over $2.1 billion worldwide against a combined production budget of roughly $178.5 million, making it one of the most commercially successful horror franchises in cinema history.[3]

Development of the franchise began over twenty years before the first film, when Ed Warren played producer Tony DeRosa-Grund a tape of Lorraine Warren's original interview with Carolyn Perron.[3]

Relationship to the Warrens' real casework

The franchise draws its central premise from Ed and Lorraine Warren's real career as paranormal investigators, but individual films take substantial dramatic licence with the underlying cases. The Conjuring 2, for example, dramatises the Enfield Poltergeist with the Warrens as its central investigators, whereas the real case's lead investigators were Maurice Grosse and Guy Lyon Playfair of the Society for Psychical Research — the Warrens' actual involvement in Enfield was limited and disputed by those directly involved in the original investigation.

Home media

Several multi-film boxsets have been released across the franchise's history. The Conjuring Universe: 7-Film Collection, released on Blu-ray on 31 May 2022, collects The Conjuring, The Conjuring 2, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, Annabelle Comes Home, and The Nun across seven discs with a combined runtime of 737 minutes.[5][6] Notably, this particular collection excludes The Curse of La Llorona, the franchise's most loosely-connected entry.[7]

As a record of the Warrens' actual casework, individual entries vary considerably in how closely they track the real investigations, ranging from loosely inspired (The Curse of La Llorona) to actively reassigning credit for real investigators' work to the Warrens (The Conjuring 2's treatment of Enfield). Readers using these films as a starting point for the underlying real cases should treat them as dramatisation rather than documentary.
