Edward Warren Miney (7 September 1926 – 23 August 2006), known as Ed Warren, was an American self-described demonologist, author, and lecturer, best known as the co-founder, with his wife Lorraine Warren, of the New England Society for Psychic Research (NESPR), the oldest ghost-hunting organisation in New England.^[1]^[2]

Early life

Warren was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and later described the house he grew up in as haunted, an experience he credited with sparking his lifelong interest in the paranormal.^[3] He met Lorraine Moran when he was around sixteen, working as an usher at the Colonial Theatre in Bridgeport, where Lorraine and her mother were regulars.^[4]

He enlisted in the Navy on his seventeenth birthday in 1943 and was deployed for around four months before his ship was sunk in the North Atlantic; he was among the few survivors of the sinking.^[4]^[5] While home on the resulting survivor's leave, he and Lorraine married.^[4] Sources differ slightly on the precise year of the marriage — NESPR's own account of the sequence of events points to around 1944, while Warren's obituary describes Lorraine as his "wife of 61 years" at the time of his 2006 death, implying 1945; both agree the marriage followed directly from his wartime survivor's leave.^[4]^[2]

Career

After the birth of their daughter, Judy, Warren attended Perry Art School, a Yale-affiliated art school in New Haven, and went on to sell paintings — mostly depictions of reportedly haunted houses and New England winter scenes.^[4]^[5] By 1952, he and Lorraine had begun touring New England, with Ed painting reportedly haunted houses and offering the paintings to homeowners in exchange for their accounts of the alleged hauntings — a practice that led directly to the founding of NESPR that same year.^[3] Warren went on to describe himself as one of only seven religious demonologists recognised in the United States at the time, a distinction unusual for someone outside the clergy and without formal theological training.^[5]^[2]

Over more than five decades, the Warrens claimed to have investigated well over 10,000 cases of alleged paranormal activity, including the Amityville haunting (on which they also consulted for the first film adaptation), the Perron family investigation in Harrisville, Rhode Island (later dramatised as The Conjuring), and the case of the "Annabelle" doll.^[1]^[5] The couple co-authored ten books on the paranormal, two of which — The Demon Murder Case and The Haunted — were adapted into television films.^[2] Several of their cases and claimed methods have been publicly disputed by researchers, authors, and others directly involved in the original events, though no formal fraud conviction was ever brought against either Warren.

Death and legacy

Warren died on 23 August 2006 at his home in Monroe, Connecticut, at the age of 79, following a long decline in health.^[3]^[2] NESPR has continued under the leadership of the couple's son-in-law, Tony Spera.^[1]
