| Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh, a graveyard dating to the 16th century, is home to what is often described as the most extensively documented poltergeist case in the world — the Mackenzie Poltergeist, attributed to Sir George Mackenzie, the 17th-century Lord Advocate known as "Bluidy Mackenzie" for his brutal persecution of the Covenanters, over a thousand of whom he had imprisoned in appalling conditions in a field adjoining the kirkyard.

| Mackenzie's own mausoleum, the "Black Mausoleum," stands within the kirkyard. In 1999, a homeless man reportedly broke into the tomb seeking shelter and fell through into an underlying plague pit; in the aftermath, hundreds of visitors began reporting scratches, bite marks, burns, and sudden fainting spells near the mausoleum. Reports of activity continued strongly enough that Edinburgh City Council eventually sealed the mausoleum and restricted access to only guided tours.
