Wentworth Woodhouse is a Grade I listed country house near Rotherham in South Yorkshire, England, widely reported as one of the most haunted stately homes in the country. It has the longest façade of any country house in England, at roughly 606 feet, and is generally cited as the largest privately built house in Europe.[1]
History
The house occupies land held by the Wentworth family since the 13th century. Its earliest incarnation was built in the 1630s by Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford, a close advisor to Charles I and Lord Deputy of Ireland.[2] Strafford was impeached by Parliament in 1640 and beheaded on Tower Hill on 12 May 1641 after Charles I, under political pressure, signed his death warrant.[3]
The present house was substantially rebuilt from around 1725 by Thomas Watson-Wentworth, 1st Marquess of Rockingham, and his son, creating two grand facades in different architectural styles built back-to-back — a Baroque West Front and a later Palladian East Front, with construction on the latter beginning in 1731.[4] The estate passed to the Fitzwilliam family, who retained it for more than two centuries.[4]
The house's fortunes declined sharply in the 20th century. Following the death of the 8th Earl Fitzwilliam in a 1948 flying accident, much of the house was vacated, and post-war coal nationalisation — along with extensive open-cast mining permitted on the estate's parkland — severely damaged the family's finances.[5] Much of the house was leased to West Riding County Council from 1950, later housing a teacher training college and then part of Sheffield City Polytechnic until 1986.[1] It passed through several private owners from 1989 onward, including architect Clifford Newbold, before being bought in 2017 by the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust for £7 million, partly funded by a National Heritage Memorial Fund grant.[6] The Trust has since undertaken a long-term restoration project, with the house open to the public since 2012.[7]
Reported hauntings
Reports of a ghost at Wentworth Woodhouse date back to at least the 19th century, when household staff reported sightings believed to be the spirit of the 1st Earl of Strafford.[8] Writer Augustus J. C. Hare recorded an account of the haunting in his 1900 memoir The Story of My Life, describing a tradition that the ghost of Lord Strafford was said to walk the house's oak staircase every Friday night, carrying his head — a detail commentators have linked to his execution by beheading.[9]
More recent reports from staff and visitors describe footsteps, slamming doors, children's laughter, a figure of a monk, and visitors reporting being touched by something unseen.[10] The house's stable block, now separately noted for reported activity, has also featured in staff accounts of unexplained sounds and voices.[8]
The house was investigated by the British television series Most Haunted on more than one occasion, including a 2017 episode filmed in the stables in which the production described capturing footage of an apparent figure, and later episodes covering the main house's oak staircase.[10][11]
