Bamburgh Castle is a medieval fortress overlooking the North Sea in Northumberland, England. History
The site has been occupied for thousands of years, with evidence of prehistoric settlement on the castle rock. During the early medieval period it became the stronghold of the Anglo-Saxon kings of Bernicia and later developed into one of the most important fortresses in northern England.[3]
The present stone castle developed following the Norman Conquest, with major construction taking place during the 12th century. The fortress played an important military role during conflicts between England and Scotland and during the Wars of the Roses. In 1464 it became the first castle in England to fall after the use of artillery during a siege.[4]
After falling into decline, Bamburgh Castle was restored during the 18th and 19th centuries. Industrialist Lord Armstrong purchased the castle in 1894 and carried out extensive restoration work, creating much of the appearance seen today.[1]
