The Ganzfeld experiment is a series of controlled parapsychological experiments designed to test claims of extrasensory perception (ESP), particularly telepathy.
Origin
The technique was developed in the early 1970s by parapsychologist Charles Honorton at the Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, building on earlier dream telepathy research conducted there by Stanley Krippner and Montague Ullman. In a typical session, a "receiver" sits in a relaxed, mildly sensory-deprived state — halved ping-pong balls placed over closed eyes with a red light shone on them, and headphones playing white or pink noise — while a separate "sender" in another room concentrates on a randomly selected image or video clip, attempting to mentally transmit it. The receiver describes any impressions out loud during the session, and afterward attempts to identify the correct target from a small set of options.
Reported results and the Hyman-Honorton debate
Ganzfeld studies through the 1970s and 1980s reported "hit rates" in the region of 30–33%, against a chance expectation of 25% for a four-option choice. Psychologist Ray Hyman argued that these results could be explained by methodological weaknesses, particularly "sensory leakage" — unintended cues passing between sender and receiver — rather than genuine telepathy. Hyman and Honorton engaged in a sustained methodological debate through the 1980s, ultimately co-authoring a joint 1986 communiqué acknowledging flaws in earlier studies while disagreeing on how much of the reported effect those flaws could explain.
The autoganzfeld and "Does Psi Exist?"
Partly in response to this debate, Honorton developed an automated version of the technique — the "autoganzfeld" — first at the Psychophysical Research Laboratories in Princeton and later at the Koestler Parapsychology Unit in Edinburgh, aiming to remove the human handling of targets that sensory-leakage criticism had focused on. Honorton died in 1992 while completing a summary of this automated research with psychologist Daryl Bem; it was published posthumously in 1994 as "Does Psi Exist? Replicable Evidence for an Anomalous Process of Information Transfer" in Psychological Bulletin, arguing that the accumulated autoganzfeld results constituted reliable evidence for psi.
Later replication attempts
In 1999, psychologists Julie Milton and Richard Wiseman published a meta-analysis of ganzfeld studies conducted since the Bem-Honorton paper and found no significant effect across them, directly disputing the earlier conclusion. Subsequent meta-analyses by other researchers, including a 2010 review by Storm, Tressoldi, and Di Risio, have reported small positive effects across the accumulated literature, keeping the ganzfeld debate active and unresolved within parapsychology, without producing a result accepted as conclusive by the wider scientific community.
Significance
The ganzfeld experiment is widely regarded, by proponents and critics alike, as parapsychology's most rigorously developed and closely scrutinised experimental paradigm — the closest the field has come to a standardised, repeatable test, and consequently the case study most often cited in broader discussions of whether small, hard-to-eliminate methodological effects can be mistaken for a genuine phenomenon.
