Forteana — named for writer Charles Fort, who spent his career cataloguing reports of anomalous phenomena that conventional science struggled to explain — is the Vault's broadest umbrella category, covering unexplained and anomalous phenomena in general, distinct from any single specific field or mechanism.
Scope
This category exists for a genuine structural reason: many of the Vault's subjects don't share an underlying claimed mechanism with one another, only a general position outside mainstream science. A cryptid sighting, a poltergeist case, and an unexplained aerial phenomenon have nothing in common biologically, physically or psychologically — they only share the fact of being unexplained. Forteana is the category built for that shared position, rather than forcing unrelated subjects into a more specific category (such as Category:Parapsychology) that doesn't actually fit their subject matter.
More specific categories should still be used alongside Forteana wherever they genuinely apply:
- Category:Cryptozoology — for claimed unknown animals specifically.
- Category:Parapsychology — for claimed psychic or mental phenomena specifically (telepathy, psychokinesis, mediumship).
- Category:Ghosts and Hauntings — for haunting-type phenomena specifically.
Forteana is the right category when a subject is genuinely general-purpose anomalous, or when it spans more than one of the more specific categories above without belonging fully to any single one.
