Cheshire is a county in North West England, bordering Merseyside, Greater Manchester, and Wales. Its mix of historic market towns, country halls, and Civil War battle sites has produced a long-running collection of local ghost stories, several of which are documented below.

Crewe Arms Hotel

A grey lady is reported moving along a corridor of the hotel, seen and, according to some accounts, heard as she passes.

Lyceum Theatre, Crewe

The theatre's stage door is said to be haunted by an actor murdered by a jealous rival performer. A second apparition, a ballet dancer who died by suicide, has been reported dancing on stage in a white period dress, with witnesses noting a lingering smell of perfume.

Marbury Hall

One of Cheshire's better-documented hauntings, first recorded in print by parapsychologist Peter Underwood in his 1978 book Ghosts of North West England. Later research into the case has questioned how far the popular version of the story can genuinely be traced back, making it a useful example of how a haunting's retelling can drift from its original source over time.

Bunbury

A phantom horseman is said to gallop down College Lane before disappearing as suddenly as he appears — a recurring type of sighting across Cheshire's rural lanes.

Rowton Moor

The site of the Battle of Rowton Moor on 14 September 1645, one of the bloodiest engagements of the English Civil War in the region, and consequently one of the county's most-cited sites for reported paranormal activity tied to a specific historical event.

Notable people

Television director and producer Karl Beattie and presenter Yvette Fielding, both associated with Most Haunted, live in Cheshire.
