In an 1890 lecture, he argued that a single well-documented case — his metaphorical "white crow" — was sufficient to disprove any categorical claim that all psychic phenomena were fraudulent, presenting Piper as his own white crow.

== Reception within psychology ==
James's outspoken support for psychical research drew significant criticism from colleagues seeking to establish psychology as a strictly empirical science. Psychologist James McKeen Cattell, editor of the journal ''Science'', argued publicly that James's standing lent unwarranted credibility to psychical research and risked damaging psychology's own scientific reputation. James was largely unmoved by such criticism, at one point stating in the ''Psychological Review'' that the evidence for many claimed psychic phenomena was, in his view, "good enough to hang a man twenty times over."
