Set in 1912, twenty-five years after the events of the original novel, the story follows the surviving members of the band that defeated Dracula, now scattered and changed: Dr. Jack Seward, a disgraced morphine addict hunting vampires across Europe; Mina Harker, tainted by Dracula's blood and barely aged; and her estranged son, Quincey, who abandons law school to pursue acting at London's Lyceum Theatre, where Bram Stoker is himself staging a production of ''Dracula''. Quincey's search for its star draws him toward Basarab, a mysterious Hungarian actor, and toward long-buried secrets about his parents and their old companions — including revelations that recast Van Helsing, and Dracula's own role in events, in a considerably different light than the original novel.
