Wells was born in the mining village of Kelloholm, Scotland. Before working as a medium, he served in the Royal Navy. He has said he discovered his abilities after suffering from pneumonia, and went on to study astrology and the Qabalah, later graduating from the Arthur Findlay College, a centre for the study of Spiritualism and psychic development.

Wells first appeared on ''[[Most Haunted]]'' as a guest medium in 2004, during an episode filmed at the Greengate Brewery alongside then-resident medium [[Derek Acorah]] and parapsychologist Matthew Smith. Following Acorah's departure from the show in 2005, Wells took over as the programme's principal medium, a role he held until 2007. Compared with Acorah, Wells was generally understood to work in a more clairvoyant style, and made occasional use of tarot cards and scrying mirrors during investigations, alongside a comparatively lower media profile.
